Cervical Cancer Awareness Week 2023
Monday, 19 June 2023
This week is Cervical Screening Awareness Week!
Cervical cancer is a cancer that’s found anywhere in the cervix. The cervix is the opening between the vagina and the womb (uterus).
Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by an infection from certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). It can often be prevented by attending cervical screening, which aims to find and treat changes to cells before they turn into cancer.
But we know that the test isn’t always easy.
Here are some tips regarding the screening:
- Ask to book a longer appointment
- This gives you more time to ask questions and feel ready.
- Bring someone you trust – they can be with you in the waiting room or during your appointment.
- Ask for a smaller speculum – a smaller size may be more comfortable for you.
- Wear a skirt or dress – you can keep it on during your appointment to help feel more covered.
- Talk to your nurse
Our aim is to encourage our patients to book appointments for their screenings and to raise awareness about the importance of the screening! Please call us on 0208 903 0609 to book your appointment.

Throughout the week Jo’s Cervical Cancer trust will be sharing different experiences from women and other people with a cervix: screening after giving birth, after menopause, after transitioning, after receiving the first invitation, and after being refused it altogether.
